about

Some of my most vivid musical memories are of songs from 8-bit video games. As a homeschooled kid growing up in a relatively isolated and often unstable home, games offered a great escape for me. The Mega Man series was my favorite, and I still have the melodies from that series running through my head over two decades later.

I'd always wanted to try my hand at reinterpreting those songs. But other artists have done such a great job adapting the music to other instruments that I wasn't sure I could contribute anything new. There are, for example, a fair number of faithful piano versions of many Mega Man songs.

Eventually I arrived at the idea of taking a looser approach to adapting each song: changing the key, melody, and rhythm in more dramatic ways than other artists have with the goal of drawing new emotions from these classic themes.

Of course, nothing will ever top Manami Matsumae's originals. Her work under the rigid constraints of the original NES console remains groundbreaking and amazing. I hope you enjoy my interpretation of her work.
